Lots of books from my favorite authors are hitting the street this season. Here are a few of the standouts.

Vision In Silver: A Novel of the Others by Anne Bishop

“The Others freed the cassandra sangue to protect the blood prophets from exploitation, not Vision in Silver Anne Bishoprealizing their actions would have dire consequences. Now the fragile seers are in greater danger than ever before—both from their own weaknesses and from those who seek to control their divinations for wicked purposes. In desperate need of answers, Simon Wolfgard, a shape-shifter leader among the Others, has no choice but to enlist blood prophet Meg Corbyn’s help, regardless of the risks she faces by aiding him.

Meg is still deep in the throes of her addiction to the euphoria she feels when she cuts and speaks prophecy. She knows each slice of her blade tempts death. But Others and humans alike need answers, and her visions may be Simon’s only hope of ending the conflict.

For the shadows of war are deepening across the Atlantik, and the prejudice of a fanatic faction is threatening to bring the battle right to Meg and Simon’s doorstep…”

This series is a gem. The pace can be a little plodding at times, but the character development and world building are pretty darn cool. Urban fantasy with practically no romance. A safe read if you hate naughty parts.  This is the third novel in the The Others Series and I hope that we will see a decisive plot twist in this novel. The heroine, Meg, is an innocent who only recently escaped brutally abusive enslavement. If you are looking for smart mouthed sword-wielding heroines, this series is not for you. If you prefer an urban fantasy filled with a variety of supes (shifters, witches, vamps, mythical creatures, etc) and world building I highly recommend this series.

Bottom Line: If you enjoy Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson Series The Others Series is for you.

The Mime Order (The Bone Season Book 2)  Samantha Shannon

“In the internationally bestselling The Bone Season, Paige Mahoney escaped the brutal penal Bone Seasoncolony of Sheol I, but now her problems have only just begun: many of the fugitives are still
missing and she is the most wanted person in London.

As Scion turns its all-seeing eye on Paige, the mime-lords and mime-queens of the city’s gangs are invited to a rare meeting of the Unnatural Assembly. Jaxon Hall and his Seven Seals prepare to take center stage, but there are bitter fault lines running through the clairvoyant community and dark secrets around every corner.

Then the Rephaim begin crawling out from the shadows. But where is Warden? Paige must keep moving, from Seven Dials to Grub Street to the secret catacombs of Camden, until the fate of the underworld can be decided. Will Paige know who to trust? The hunt for the dreamwalker is on.”

Shannon’s first book in this series, The Bone Season, generated a ton of buzz. Scoring her first publishing contract at the at of 16, Shannon has been held to high expectations and she definitely The Mime Order Samantha Shannondelivers with this series.

A dystopian tale of telepathic aliens who have taken over the Earth, The Mime Order follows Paige and her group of clairvoyant rebels in their quest to overthrow the alien government. A burgeoning but taboo romantic relationship with her alien master threatens to put the resistance at risk.

I listened to the first book on audible.com and loved the interpretation. Paige is rather naive and the book full of her musings which drove me mad at times. Overall a clever new world I want to see unfold.

Bottom Line: If you enjoy the Clean Sweep Series by Ilona Andrews this series is for you.

The Master (The Game Maker Series Book 2) by Kresley Cole

“A need colder than Siberian winter meets an attitude hotter than the Florida sun in #1 New York Times bestselling author Kresley Cole’s sultry new Game Maker novel. The Master

Everyone fears the Master…

Rich, irresistible politician/Mafiya boss Maksimilian Sevastyan prefers tall, obedient blondes to fulfill his…complicated desires. That is, until the icy Russian encounters a disobedient brunette whose exquisite little body threatens his legendary restraint.

Except her.

Catarina Marín was a well-off young wife until her world fell apart. Now she’s hiding out, forced to start working as an escort in Miami. Her very first client is beyond gorgeous, but when he tells her what he plans to do to her, Cat almost walks out of the door. If pleasure is a game, play to win. After their mind-blowing encounter burns out of control, the lovers crave more. If they escape the deadly threats surrounding them, can Maksim overcome his past–to offer Cat his future? Only then will she tempt him with what he really wants: her, all tied up with a bow.”

Cole’s first book in this series, The Professional, is passionate and dark. Much like her Immortals After Eastern PromisesDark Series, the heroines are young, opinionated, sexually confident sorority types who fall for older tormented alpha males. Following her recent trend in Lothaire and  MacRieve, Cole’s leading men are  increasingly self-loathing and abusive. Sevastyan, the leading man in The Professional, is a vicious hit man who falls for the boss’ Mid-West farm raised daughter. The Master focuses on Sevastyan’s brother, Maksim, a wealthy politician who falls for an escort. Some of the most disturbing scenes in both books have nothing to do with sex but instead with the abusive childhood both heroes suffered at the hands of their alcoholic father. Both books are full of sex & kinky bedroom scenarios.

I listened to The Professional on audible.com the first time around. The narrator’s accents were giggle Shakira Pique
inducing at times and grating at others, particularly when dealing with Natalie’s whining. The Master’s use of three languages kept me on my toes and at times distracted me from the story. Overall, The Professional is harsher than The Master. While The Professional reminds me of the film “Eastern Promises“, The Master is more like a salsa version of “Pretty Woman”. I kept seeing Shakira and her husband, Gerard Pique, as stand-ins for the leads.

Bottom Line: Not for the traditional BDSM enthusiast or the traditional IAD reader, The Game Maker Novels are graphic, violent and sexually explicit. If you think that 50 Shades of Grey was hard to stomach steer clear of this series.

Dead Heat (Alpha & Omega Book 4) by Patricia Briggs

“Praised as “the perfect blend of action, romance, suspense and paranormal,”the Alpha and Dead Heat Patricia BriggsOmega novels transport readers into the realm of the werewolf, where Charles Cornick and
Anna Latham embody opposite sides of the shifter personality. Now, a pleasure trip drops the couple into the middle of some bad supernatural business…”

The previous Alpha & Omega book, Fair Game, was pretty gory. The final chapters were full of action and violence. DEAD HEAT promises to move the fae war forward once again putting Anna & Charles on the front lines. This is the next to last book in the series. Briggs’ style is brisk and uncomplicated. Sex scenes tend to be PG and few. I’d love to see more heat between Anna & Charles.

Bottom Line: If you enjoy were novels that include a variety of supes and are light on the sexy side this series is for you.

The Shadows (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 13) by J.R. Ward

“Two brothers bound by more than blood fight to change a brutal destiny in the heart-wrenching new novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood by #1 New York Times bestselling The Shadows JR Wardauthor J. R. Ward.

Trez “Latimer” doesn’t really exist. And not just because the identity was created so that a Shadow could function in the underbelly of the human world. Sold by his parents to the Queen of the S’Hsibe as a child, Trez escaped the Territory and has been a pimp and an enforcer in Caldwell, NY for years- all the while on the run from a destiny of sexual servitude. He’s never had anyone he could totally rely on… except for his brother, iAm.

iAm’s sole goal has always been to keep his brother from self-destructing- and he knows he’s failed. It’s not until the Chosen Serena enters Trez’s life that the male begins to turn things around… but by then it’s too late. The pledge to mate the Queen’s daughter comes due and there is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and no negotiating.

Trapped between his heart and a fate he never volunteered for, Trez must decide whether to endanger himself and others- or forever leave behind the female he’s in love with. But then an unimaginable tragedy strikes and changes everything. Staring out over an emotional abyss, Trez must find a reason to go on or risk losing himself and his soul forever. And iAm, in the name of brotherly love, is faced with making the ultimate sacrifice… “

The 13th installment in Ward’s hugely successful Black Dagger Brotherhood Series, THE SHADOWS focuses on the most enigmatic and least understood characters in the series. Unusual beings whose powers and abilities have not been fully explained, Trez and iAm are the only things that strike fear into the hearts of the BDB vampires. Book 12 in the series laid the groundwork for this novel giving us a peek into the private lives of these troubled characters. Instead of cool unemotional killers Ward described men on the verge of emotional collapse and major life choices.

Bottom Line: Ward’s BDB series is violent & full of sex. If you like alpha males, vampires, sexy scenes & intense world building this novel is for you.

Burned: Fever Series Book 7 Karen Marie Moning

It’s easy to walk away from lies. Power is another thing.

MacKayla Lane would do anything to save the home she loves. A gifted sidhe-seer, she’s Burnedalready fought and defeated the deadly Sinsar Dubh—an ancient book of terrible evil—yet its hold on her has never been stronger.

When the wall that protected humans from the seductive, insatiable Fae was destroyed on Halloween, long-imprisoned immortals ravaged the planet. Now Dublin is a war zone with factions battling for control. As the city heats up and the ice left by the Hoar Frost King melts, tempers flare, passions run red-hot, and dangerous lines get crossed.

Seelie and Unseelie vie for power against nine ancient immortals who have governed Dublin for millennia; a rival band of sidhe-seers invades the city, determined to claim it for their own; Mac’s former protégé and best friend, Dani “Mega” O’Malley, is now her fierce enemy; and even more urgent, Highland druid Christian MacKeltar has been captured by the Crimson Hag and is being driven deeper into Unseelie madness with each passing day. The only one Mac can depend on is the powerful, dangerous immortal Jericho Barrons, but even their fiery bond is tested by betrayal.

It’s a world where staying alive is a constant struggle, the line between good and evil gets blurred, and every alliance comes at a price. In an epic battle against dark forces, Mac must decide who she can trust, and what her survival is ultimately worth. “

Fans of the series are so devoted they have been known to take sick days off from work on release days. So far, BURNED has not been an exception. Fans have posted mixed reviews as the novel includes a previously released scene between two major characters. BURNED and it’s predecessor ICED focus on a minor character from the first part of the series, Dani. Moning writes pretty hot stuff and loves the dynamic between younger unsophisticated women and older Alpha males. Interactions usually revolve on the heroines trying to stay alive while wondering why their love interests can’t open up to them.

Bottom Line: If you enjoy massive world-building, cliff hangers, sexy scenes, cryptic dialog and hardcore action this book is for you.
